The Commonwealth Council on Aging's Guiding Principles
The Commonwealth Council on Aging believes that Virginia should base its approach to addressing the needs of its older residents on the following guiding principles. These principles reflect each Council member's commitment to the independence, dignity, and security of the people they serve.
- The Commonwealth should support families in their efforts to care for frail, older members in their own homes and communities.
- The Commonwealth should encourage persons of all ages to take personal responsibility for developing healthy lifestyles.
- The Commonwealth should encourage Virginians of all working ages to prepare for retirement in comfort and dignity.
- The Commonwealth should reduce barriers to the gainful employment of older persons.
- The Commonwealth should provide opportunities for all Virginians to develop the skills a technological age requires.
- The Commonwealth should utilize the wisdom and experience of older persons in service to their communities.
