2000 Census Demographic Profiles (.exe) (06/07/2002) This compressed file contains 3 files - the "Virginia_DP1-4.pdf", "About_the_profile.pdf" and "VA_Demo_Profile1-4.xls". The first ".pdf" file contains four pages of formatted data for Virginia. The second .pdf file has background information about the Demographic Profile series from the Census Bureau, including cautionary notes regarding sample error. Sub-state data for counties, cities, regional Planning and Service Areas ("PSAs"), Census Designated Places, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Indian Tribe Reservation Areas and U.S. Congressional Districts can be found in the Excel workbook (third) file. The Demographic Profile contains both 100-percent and sample data. The 100-percent data were asked of all people and about every housing unit. The sample data were asked of a sample of housing units and persons in group quarters (e.g., college dormitories). The Demographic Profile contains 100-percent topics, such as sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino, household relationship, household type, group quarters population, housing occupancy, and housing tenure. The sample items include sample population topics, such as school enrollment, educational attainment, marital status, grandparents as caregivers, veteran status, disability status of the civilian non-institutionalized population, residence, nativity and place of birth, region of birth of the foreign born, language spoken at home, ancestry, employment status, commuting to work, occupation, industry, class of worker, income, and poverty status. The sample items also include sample housing topics, such as units in structure, year structure built, rooms, year householder moved into unit, vehicles available, house heating fuel, occupants per room, value, mortgage status and selected monthly owner costs, selected monthly owner costs as a percentage of household income, gross rent, and gross rent as a percentage of household income. Newly-reported items of particular interest to aging program planners include such topics as "Grandparents as Caregivers", "Disability Status of the Civilian Noninstitutionalized Population, Age 65 and over", and "Poverty Status of Individuals, age 65 and over". Note that the numbers in the Excel workbook given in Table DP-1 (based on 100-percent data) may differ from those in DP-2, DP-3, and DP-4 (based on sample data). For example, the total number of people age 65 and over in Table DP-1 (100-percent count) may not necessarily be the same as the number of people age 65 and over in Table DP-2 (sample estimate). Users interested
in a specific 2000 information topic covered in the Demographic Profile
series (or historical comparisons with 1990) may find it easier to obtain
such data from the web site of the
Weldon
Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia. The Weldon Cooper
staff have broken up the Demographic Profile data into topical Excel spreadsheet
tables which will download quicker than the larger files obtained here.
However, users may also find having the full demographic profile data
set in one comprehensive file more convenient for comparative analysis. For more demographic information, visit our Links page and look under the subject heading "Demographics". You can also contact us for more information or assistance. Note:
