Today, the insurance needs of most older Virginians go far beyond the traditional Medicare Part A and Part B. Additional insurance coverage may be gained by Medicaid coverage (for qualifying individuals), by purchasing a Medicare supplement or "Medigap" policy, or through long-term care insurance. If you are confused about what type of insurance you need, or whether you have enough insurance coverage, the Virginia Department for the Aging (VDA) may be able to help you navigate the maze of insurance options.
VDA staff can provide you with general information about the Medicare, Medicaid and additional insurance policies available in Virginia. Some of the tools available to Medicare beneficiaries and their families include:
- A comparison of available Medigap insurance policies;
- A directory of long-term care facilities; and
- A consumer guide to selecting a long-term care facility.
A trained VICAP counselor in your community may also be able to assist you.
