Nutrition Services
Each of Virginia's 25 local Area Agencies on Aging provide nutrition services to seniors and other eligible individuals.
Senior centers and other community sites (also known as Senior Cafes), provide individuals with a nutritious meal and the opportunity to socialize with their peers. They also allow the individual to participate in programs on health education, disease prevention, and other activities of interest. Seniors may also be able to receive transportation to the Congregate Nutrition Site.
Homebound and frail seniors who meet eligibility criteria can receive a nutritious Home Delivered Meal from a staff member or volunteer. The meal delivery doubles as a "reassurance visit", allowing the staff member or volunteer to check on the senior's well-being.
In addition, Nutrition Screening is available to all seniors who participate in the nutrition programs. Nutrition screening is done to verify that an individual's diet is meeting his or her nutritional needs.
In certain regions of the state, the "Farm Market Fresh for Seniors" program helps certain older residents purchase fresh food from farmers markets. View Farm Market 2005 (.pdf) for more information on this program.
